Barlestone


Barlestone is an attractive, medium sized village about 11 miles from Leicester near the pretty market town of Market Bosworth in the West of the County and there are just over 2000 inhabitants.  In Barlestone and the neighbouring village of Osbaston there are a number of shops, facilities and services, including medical and dental practices.

Barwell

Barwell is a civil parish and large village in Leicestershire, England, with a population of about 6,300. The name translates as "Stream of the Boar" and is believed to originate from a boar that used to drink from the well near a brook in Barwell. It was originally known as Borewell, but later became "Barwell", the name in use today.
The village has two churches; the parish church was built in 1220 and has an interesting board at the back of the church listing all of the rectors beginning with William in 1209 up to the present day.  The Queens Head is the oldest public house and oldest building in the town, apart of course from St Mary's church which dates back to 1220.
There are a number of amenities in the town including medical and dental practices. The village also boasts successful football and cricket teams and a large popular indoor bowling complex.

Broughton Astley

Broughton Astley is a large village and civil parish in the Harborough district of Leicestershire, England, twinned with Geveze in Brittany, about 30 miles from St. Malo. It is situated in the south west of Leicestershire, about 6 miles (10 km) east of Hinckley and about 9 miles (14 km) from the centre of Leicester.  The village has 3 primary schools and a secondary school, which also provides good Adult Education and sports facilities in the evenings.  There is an active Drama Group in the town, which welcomes newcomers.  Broughton Astley also has a number of local amenities with shops, pubs, medical and dental practices and a library.

Burbage

Burbage is a suburb of the larger urban area of Hinckley and is part of Hinckley and Bosworth borough. It is considered by some to be a commuter location for large parts of Leicestershire, Warwickshire and the West Midlands. Due to the fact it is less than a mile from the M69 (which links that M6 to the M1) and the A5. Just a mile away from the village is Burbage Common and Woods. This is a country park ran by the borough council. It is free to enter and is open dawn to dusk every year with its own dedicated park ranger. The nearest railway station to the village is Hinckley which is about 1.5 miles (2.4 km) from Burbage centre.

Croft

The village of Croft is about 8 miles south west of the City of Leicester in the District of Blaby Leicestershire. The village comprises a mix of house types of various ages, factories (situated on Winston Avenue) and shops. The village has a primary school, parish church and public house. Croft Quarry occupies a site at the end of the older part of the village. There are also two homes providing long and short term accommodation for the elderly.

Earl Shilton

Earl Shilton is a large village or small town in Leicestershire, England, some 3 miles from Hinckley and about 10 miles (16 km) from Leicester, with a population of around 9,000. Elmesthorpe

Elmesthorpe is a village and civil parish in the Blaby district of Leicestershire, England. It is situated to the south-east of Earl Shilton, near to Hinckley on the A47 road. The parish of Elmesthorpe has strong connections with King Richard III and the Battle of Bosworth. It is said that the now partially ruined 13th century church provided shelter for the officers of Richard's army on their march from Leicester to the Battle.
In Elmesthorpe, there is a popular local pub, "The Wentworth Arms", and the "Badgers Mount Hotel".

Enderby

Enderby is a civil parish in the district of Blaby , in Leicestershire, England. It is situated on the south western outskirts of the city of Leicester. The parish consists of the village of Enderby and St John's which is separated from the main village by the M1 motorway and is situated either side of the B4114 between Fosse Park and Narborough.

Also located within the civil parish of Enderby although not part of the main village are the out-of-town shopping parks of Fosse Park and Grove Farm Triangle, the business park, Grove Park and the Everards Brewery. Enderby is bordered by the City of Leicester and the civil parishes of Lubbesthorpe, Glen Parva, Narborough, Whetstone and Braunstone Town.

According to the Enderby Heritage group, the definitive origin of the name cannot be established. Enderby is the home of prominent Leicestershire diarist and letter writer, Frank Evans, who regularly writes for the Leicester Mercury and several national newspapers.

Higham on the Hill

The geographical centre of England (as calculated by the Ordnance Survey) is situated in the parish of Higham-on-the-Hill near to the village of Fenny Drayton.  In spite of the radical development of urban Britain, Higham on the Hill has remained essentially a farming village with life centred round its two churches, school, Community Centre, two pubs and village shop. The population has not changed much during the 19th and 20th centuries, it being now just over 700.

Hinckley

Hinckley is a town in south-west Leicestershire, England, twinned with Le Grand-Quevilly, France, and Herford, Germany.  It is administered by Hinckley and Bosworth Borough Council. Hinckley is currently the second largest town in Leicestershire, after Loughborough (Leicester itself being a city).  Hollycroft, Middlefield, and Wykin are suburbs of Hinckley. Hinckley is a traditional centre of the hosiery industry. Since the Second World War the hosiery industry has steadily shrunk in size although several textile firms remain in the area.
Hinckley also has a history of engineering and is home to the Triumph Motorcycle company, and Ultima Sports Ltd, a manufacturer of sports cars. Hinckley is also the home of Paynes Garages Ltd, one of the oldest family-owned Ford Motor Dealerships in the UK. The business remains family owned with Nigel Payne, grandson of the founder, one of the current Directors.
The town's central location and good links to the UK motorway network have made it a popular location for distribution warehouses. Hinckley is served by the A5 and the M69. The M69 links Hinckley to the nearest cities, Coventry and Leicester, and the M1 and M6 motorways.

Lutterworth

Lutterworth is a market town in the Harborough district of Leicestershire, England. The town is located in southern Leicestershire, 11 km (7 miles) north of Rugby, in Warwickshire and 24 km (15 miles) south of Leicester.  Lutterworth lies on the A426 Leicester-Rugby road, adjacent to the M1 motorway at junction 20.  It is also located within a few miles of the M6 motorway and A5 trunk road.

Lutterworth's main claim to fame is that Frank Whittle, inventor of the jet engine, developed some of the world's first jet engines at the British Thomson-Houston works in Lutterworth, and in nearby Rugby, during the late 1930s and the 1940s. The engine for the UK's first jet aeroplane the Gloster E.28/39 was produced in Lutterworth.  A statue of the plane stands in the middle of a roundabout just south of the town as a memorial.

Some 4 km (2.5 miles) to the west of the town is a large logistics and distribution centre called Magna Park, which is the main source of employment in the Lutterworth area. Magna Park is built upon the site of the old Bitteswell aerodrome.  Bitteswell is a small village and civil parish in the Harborough district of Leicestershire in England. This is part of Lutterworth, and situated just to the north of that town.

Market Bosworth

Market Bosworth is a small market town and civil parish in Leicestershire, England. It formerly formed a district known as the Market Bosworth Rural District. In 1974 it merged with the Hinckley Rural District to form a new district named Hinckley and Bosworth.  The market square located in the centre of the village is surrounded by amenities, including various shops and a post office. An active market is operating. The village also has three schools and churches, a fire station, and a hotel. A country park and a water trust offer outside recreation, as well as the site at which the Battle of Bosworth took place.
